Gideon the Ninth Audiobook Summary

The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense. Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead.

Gideon the Ninth is notable for its writing, which mixes gothic horror with contemporary humor. Muir acknowledges that her writing “includes useless memes and jokes for the reader that nobody in my universe would get.” In her review for Vox, Constance Grady commended Muir’s ability to slide her “voice seamlessly from Lovecraftian gothic mode into a slangy contemporary mode without ever undercutting one or the other for cheap comedy.” Adam Rowe in Forbes also commented on Muir’s incorporation of “2019 language tics.” In Rowe’s interview with Muir, Muir said that the “irreverent tone” was intended “to balance out the horror aspect and some of the heavier, more Gormenghastian stylings.” Jason Sheehan’s NPR review said of the novel’s genre: “Gideon the Ninth is too funny to be horror, too gooey to be science fiction, has too many spaceships and autodoors to be fantasy, and has far more bloody dismemberings than your average parlor romance.”

Muir consulted with writer, HEMA martial artist and fencer Lissa Harris on realistic depictions of swordfighting and combat. The collaboration is reflected in Gideon’s journey retraining from a soldier’s longsword to a duelist’s rapier; Harris herself transitioned from fencing to the longsword. Harris said that Gideon is a “fiendishly talented fighter who is forced to use new and unfamiliar tools, and has to sacrifice some measure of subtlety in favor of crude effectiveness.”

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir Reviews

“Deft, tense and atmospheric, compellingly immersive and wildly original.” ―The New York Times

Unlike anything I’ve ever read. Muir’s writing is as sharp as a broken tooth, and just as unsettling.” ―V.E. Schwab, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

“With a snorting laugh and two middle fingers, the whole thing burns end-to-end. It is deep when you expect shallow, raucous when you expect dignity and, in the end, absolutely heartbreaking when you least expect it.” ―NPR

“Warm and cold; goofy and gleaming; campy and epic; a profane Daria in space.” ―Robin Sloan, author of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore

I can’t remember the last time I was so delightedly baffled by a book. An astonishing, genre-defying, hilarious-violent-tragic-horrifying-thrilling wonder of a novel.” ―Kiersten White, NYT Bestselling Author of And I Darken

The Seventh House candidate reveals herself as an impostor. The seventh Lyctor, Cytherea the First, killed the actual Seventh House heiress and cavalier, assumed the heiress’ identity and has been murdering the others. She has been suffering from blood cancer for millennia, and now wants to kill the Emperor in revenge. Cytherea hopes the murders will lure the Emperor away from his Lyctors and the Cohort, leaving him vulnerable. The survivors battle throughout the House, but Cytherea is apparently invincible. Just as Harrow is about to be killed, Gideon commits suicide to force Harrow to become a Lyctor. Harrow kills Cytherea before falling unconscious.

Harrow wakes up on the Emperor’s flagship; she and a wounded Ianthe are the only confirmed survivors of Canaan House. She begs the Emperor to resurrect Gideon, only to learn that Gideon’s soul is irreversibly merged with hers. The Emperor reveals that the Empire is in decline and most of the Lyctors have fallen in battle or gone insane. He promises to restore the Ninth House to glory, and in exchange Harrow agrees to serve the Emperor as Harrowhark the First.

Good Omens Audio book Summary

Winner of the Audiophile Magazine Earphones Award.

The classic collaboration from the internationally bestselling authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, soon to be an original series starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant.

‘Good Omens . . . is something like what would have happened if Thomas Pynchon, Tom Robbins and Don DeLillo had collaborated. Lots of literary inventiveness in the plotting and chunks of very good writing and characterization. It’s a wow. It would make one hell of a movie. Or a heavenly one. Take your pick.’—Washington Post

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world’s only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon—both of whom have lived amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle—are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture.

And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (1990) is a World Fantasy Award-nominated novel written as a collaboration between the English authors Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

The book is a comedy about the birth of the son of Satan and the coming of the End Times. There are attempts by the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley to sabotage the coming of the end times, having grown accustomed to their comfortable surroundings in England. One subplot features a mixup at the small country hospital on the day of birth and the growth of the Antichrist, Adam, who grows up with the wrong family, in the wrong country village. Another subplot concerns the summoning of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, each a big personality in their own right. In 2003, the novel was listed at number 68 on the BBC’s survey The Big Read.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Audiobooks: Good Omens Reviews

This is the third copy of this book I have purchased. My daughter has one and refuses to relinquish it; I don’t blame her. I still have my original copy, a first edition, but it is fairly worn out and holds a place of reverence on a shelf of my all time favorite books by my all time favorite authors. Pratchett and Gaiman happen to head the roster of said authors. When Amazon Prime announced the soon to be released series based on the book, Good Omens, I knew it was time to read the book again even though I had re-read it for the God (or his/hers main opposite) knows how many time quite recently. Unfortunately I was afraid my time-worn, much loved, original might not survive another session. Thus my recent purchase of this latest copy. It is sturdy, well printed, it arrived on time and, after reading it again, I have lent it to my son with a stern warning that I WILL have it back. It is, and always has been, a great read, and such is the Prime Video of the series. Read the book, watch the series, and repeat as often as you wish to be entertained. I still mourn the loss of Terry Pratchett but Neil Gaiman wrote a masterful screen play that absolutely works. Start with the book, though, and I very highly recommend it.

I had so much fun listen this book. The passages are hilarious. I recommend it.

668—The Neighbour of the Beast was slated as the title for a sequel to Good Omens, but after Gaiman moved to the United States, Pratchett expressed doubt that a sequel would be written. Gaiman later affirmed this in one of his essays, titled Terry Pratchett: An Appreciation. Pratchett died in 2015. In 2017, Gaiman revealed – as part of the filming of the television series based on the book – that he and Pratchett had done some plotting for the sequel, including that “[t]here would have been a lot of angels in the sequel”, one of whom was Gabriel, who was only briefly mentioned in Good Omens but would figure more prominently in the television series. When asked if Neil had any plans on releasing a sequel to Good Omens or maintaining its status as a standalone work, Gaiman stated that there was a plot for one that Pratchett wanted to be told, but that whether or not it would be made would depend on certain factors.

I had purchased almost all of these books in either paperback or hard back form for years, never finishing the series- partially due to vision loss; however, when I learned that Alexa could read my Kindle books to me I decided to purchase all 14 of these books on Kindle and I just finished the final book. Excellent work of fiction with may, many life lessons to be learned. Robert Jordan was a genius!

Memory of Light Audiobook Summary

The Wheel of Time ® is a PBS Great American Read Selection! Now in development for TV!

Since 1990, when Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time® burst on the world with its first book, The Eye of the World, readers have been anticipating the final scenes of this extraordinary saga, which has sold over forty million copies in over thirty languages. A Memory of Light is the fantastic conclusion to the internationally-bestselling epic fantasy juggernaut.

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

When Robert Jordan died in 2007, all feared that these concluding scenes would never be written. But working from notes and partials left by Jordan, established fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson stepped in to complete the masterwork. With The Gathering Storm (Book 12) and Towers of Midnight (Book 13) behind him, both of which were # 1 New York Times hardcover bestsellers, Sanderson now re-creates the vision that Robert Jordan left behind in A Memory of Light.

Edited by Jordan’s widow, who edited all of Jordan’s books, A Memory of Light will delight, enthrall, and deeply satisfy all of Jordan’s legions of readers.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass.
What was, what will be, and what is,
may yet fall under the Shadow.
Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.

Memory of Light Audiobook Reviews

Until now.
I thought about trying to be very clinical and cold while writing this review, just give a few stiff comments like “ yes, it’s a very good read “ etc. but I couldn’t.
I’m a reader that GOES to where I’m reading about. I become the characters I’m reading about, hear their different voices, see their different faces. Especially if the book is this well written. Dare I say it… it seemed I could feel their emotions.
The very best of the series, this book is so well written, and the story so amazing, it’s hard to describe.
I dare you to pick it up and not love it.
The worst thing I can say about this book and really the entire series is that it’s over.
My next plan concerning my reading, is to start re-reading this entire series immediately.

Great Hunt Audiobook Reviews

Second novel in one of the greatest series ever written. Not the best in the series, but not the worst either. If you’ve read the first and you are considering continuing, you really should. If you haven’t read the first, start with “The Eye of the World”. As one progresses through the series more and more characters are added which may be daunting for new readers of fantasy, but all the characters stories are interesting and move the plot along nicely.

Names of places and people can be confusing for those not used to fantasy writing, but the author conveniently provides a pronunciation guide at the end of the novel that can easily be referenced (although the presence of such a thing is telling in-and-of itself).

This series as a whole has everything one could wish for from high fantasy: action, magic, politics, history, relationships, character growth, triumph, betrayal, hope, tragedy, comedy. Not as dark as A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), not as light as Narnia, not as magical as Harry Potter, not as political as Malazan, and not as historical as Lord of the Rings. However, what this series accomplishes is a blend of all of these in a masterful work of art that is unrivaled in balance across themes.

RIP Robert Jordan, may your work be preserved from the turning of the wheel to delight future generations, time without end.

Fires of Heaven Audiobook Reviews

Alright, once again I’m in a ‘four or five stars’ predicament. And as usual, I’m calling it a 4.5 and rounding up. Call it generosity, call it not being critical enough, whatever. This was a great book. I don’t know why I even say when I’m between ratings, I could just rate it and move on. And now I’m talking about the fact that I didn’t just rate it and move on. Anyway…

Another thread in the Pattern complete. The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills and it wills me to love this series. I am in deep now, this being the fifth of fourteen books, and the best way to describe my feeling within this world is.. comfortable. I have reached a point where even areas of the story that are paced slower still remain interesting to me, simply because I’ve grown fond of this world and the characters that fill it. Jordan remains a descriptive master, and if you give his writing the thought that it asks for you will find yourself in places as fully realized as those around me as I type. Now, that isn’t to say that I will let any and all slow pacing off the hook, I’m just saying that it didn’t bother me in this book. Maybe it will in the future, who knows?

Now, the slower pace for this one did lend itself to some excellent characterization. Especially in Nynaeve. We get to spend (what felt like) more time with she and Elayne in this one, and I am really enjoying Nynaeve’s growth. She is finally becoming a bit more self-reflective, which I’ve been waiting for for some time. You can feel her start to change, and feel how it affects the characters around her too. I will admit that she has a long way to go when it comes to her attitude toward men. And really, no character gets a pass on this. It seems every man in the series can hardly stand to be around women, and the same for every woman with men. At least in their internal dialogue. It comes off false, and frankly a little weird. It’s one thing to fear Aes Sedai, but this is just frustratingly blind, and way too generalized. I’m ready for that to change. It doesn’t bother me totally, because it’s sort of been this way from the beginning, but if it did change it would be welcome. Anyhow, I was also pleased with Mat’s POVs, I just wish there were more of them! I won’t detail his growth because it’s a major spoiler for readers in the earlier books, but it is very satisfying to watch, and Mat has come a long way from the boy he was back in Emond’s Field. I have the sense that he has a long way yet to go, too. I was a bit surprised to find that Perrin has no POV chapters whatsoever in this one. He is mentioned offhandedly a couple of times but other than that, we are left in the dark as to just what Perrin Goldeneyes is up to during this book. I’m eager to have that cleared up in the next book. Rand’s part of the story remains as compelling as ever, and is likely still my favorite bit, but I’m glad to see some interest building in areas of the story where it may have lacked before.

Areas of slow pacing aside, The Fires of Heaven really did have some moments that packed a punch. These are long books, and reality never takes a break, so they can take me some time to finish, but I was pretty enthralled with the story throughout. I can usually tell how invested in a series I am by how many notes and highlights I have for each book in my Kindle, and I’ve got a whole hell of a lot for this one. The Wheel of Time is so far living up to its reputation for me, and has maybe even exceeded my expectations a bit. It’s ambitious, interesting, full of magic, and shows no signs of stopping now. Lord of Chaos is up next.

Life is a dream from which we all must wake before we can dream again.

“Frighteningly real…compelling.… It’ll keep you riveted.” —The Detroit NewsAn astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Now humankind’s most thrilling fantasies have come true. Creatures extinct for eons roam Jurassic Park with their awesome presence and profound mystery, and all the world can visit them—for a price.Until something goes wrong.…In Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton taps all his mesmerizing talent and scientific brilliance to create his most electrifying technothriller.“Crichton’s dinosaurs are genuinely frightening.” —Chicago Sun-Times“Full of suspense.” —The New York Times Book Review.

Jurassic Park Audiobook Reviews

This is the THE technothriller, THE dinosaur novel, and THE best of Michael Crichtons works. I saw the movie first and even though it’s still great, I believe the book is far above it.

After a bunch of mysterious incidents in Costa Rica, a team of experts is summoned to the new island resort of a biotech company and soon discover it is home to genetically recreated dinosaurs. However, it soon becomes apparent that those running the park have arrogantly overestimated their control over nature. A corporate espionage plot is just the final nail in the coffin needed to tip the park into total chaos.

With scenes of heart-pounding action, terror, and suspense and also interesting characters and fascinating discussions of chaos theory and mankind’s hubris, Crichton’s novel is truly a great read.

Fellowship of the Ring Audiobook Summary

Inspired by The Hobbit, and begun in 1937, The Lord of the Rings is a trilogy that Tolkien created to provide ‘the necessary background of history for Elvish tongues.’ From these academic aspirations was born one of the most popular and imaginative works in English literature. The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume in the trilogy, tells of the fateful power of the One Ring. It begins a magnificent tale of adventure that will plunge the members of the Fellowship of the Ring into a perilous quest and set the stage for the ultimate clash between powers of good and evil. In this splendid, unabridged audio production of Tolkien’s great work, all the inhabitants of a magical universe-hobbits, elves, and wizards-step colorfully forth from the pages. Rob Inglis’ narration has been praised as a masterpiece of audio.

Fellowship of the Ring Audiobook Reviews

I have a friend who’s been trying to get me to read this series, and I have resisted her suggestion quite strongly, as I had already seen the movies, and was worried that they would spoil the books for me, nor did I think that I would like the series, although, I had seen the movies, and thought them very well done, I didn’t think the book series was for me, as I am very picky, especially when it comes to fantasy. But I was completely blown away by this first book in the series, there’s some great world building, and and it doesn’t take much to come invested in the story, to come to root and care for and about the characters. Now, I’m only wondering why it took me so long to read this. Well worth the read, one I’d highly recommend, now I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Eye of the World Audiobook Reviews

These are my thoughts about the entire series:
I think many people who complain about this series miss the point entirely. You’ll notice the majority of the complaints stem from those who find the books too long winded, too slow, taking too long to get to the point, and focused on too much minutia in detail.
To those complaints I say: That’s the point.
This series isn’t about getting to the climax as fast as possible. These aren’t plane ride or beach day books. This is a series for fantasy fans who want the minutia. For those who revel in being able to visualize every single detail of the world. These are for people who want to escape their mundane worlds for some time and live in another, more fantastical world.
If that’s what you’re looking for in a fantasy series then that is what Wheel of Time offers in droves.
To those who say that this series is just generic fantasy, you’re right. But, man, it’s wrapped in a brilliant packaging. I would say this is the generic fantasy trope  (chosen one destined to defeat big bad) done the best it could possibly be done. It’s a beautifully realized world in every way.
I think people are really hard on this series.  It does what it sets out to do and does it brilliantly.

Ender’s Game Audiobook Summary

Winner of the Hugo and Nebula Awards
In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race’s next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew ‘Ender’ Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn’t make the cut-young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.
Ender’s skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.
Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender’s two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives.
Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game is the winner of the 1985 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1986 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

Ender’s Game Audiobook Reviews

When I was in ninth grade, we were taken to the library and told to choose a book so we’d have something to read between standardized tests. Instead of picking a book, I started screwing around in the library. Generally getting into trouble. Typical teen stuff.

The librarian eventually nabbed me, and asked what sort of books I liked reading. For some reason that I still can’t explain to this day, I thought that all the “cool” kids read science fiction. So that’s what I said.

“Then you should read this book,” she told me, handing me a fairly worn copy of ‘Ender’s Game,’ and telling me that she loved it enough to re-read it every year.

I wasn’t thrilled with it, to be honest. The cover seemed kind of hokey. It smelled funny (hey, I was a kid). I had no idea what a “Hugo” or “Nebula” award might be. But the bell was ringing, testing would begin shortly, and I was kind of stuck for options. I checked out the book, and went on my way.

I’ve always been a fast test taker, and so about an hour into a three-hour test I was done and bored. I opened the book and started reading. And a two hours later I was done.

Up to that point, I’d read tons of books—mostly of the “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” and “Encyclopedia Brown” variety. This was the first “grownup” fiction I’d ever read. And I was hooked. I went on to read everything I could find by Orson Scott Card. I wrote tons of short stories as creative writing assignments, all featuring Battle School or Ender himself. And I took what was a sorta-hobby of writing short stories and “books” (very short books, I assure you) and ended up turning it into a lifelong pursuit.

And, like the librarian, I’ve taken to re-reading this book every year. I’ve given away more copies of this single book than I can count. And I’ve owned every English-language version of it ever released. It’s a benchmark, life-shaping book for me.

‘Ender’s Game’ was the book that taught me that books could be what you do for a living. And for that, I’m incredibly grateful. My only regret is that I can’t give it more than five stars.
