This Audiobook Free Summary

When seven murder victims are found in a small town, the homicide investigation shakes a small-town sheriff to her core in James Patterson’s tense thriller.

Once a luxurious southern getaway on a rustic lake, then reduced to a dilapidated crash pad, the Summer House is now the grisly scene of a nighttime mass murder. Eyewitnesses point to four Army Rangers — known as the Night Ninjas — recently returned from Afghanistan.
To ensure that justice is done, the Army sends Major Jeremiah Cook, a veteran and former NYPD cop, to investigate. But the major and his elite team arrive in sweltering Georgia with no idea their grim jobs will be made exponentially more challenging by local law enforcement, who resists the Army’s intrusion and stonewall them at every turn.
As Cook and his squad struggle to uncover the truth behind the condemning evidence, the pieces just won’t fit — and forces are rallying to make certain damning secrets die alongside the victims in the murder house. With his own people in the cross-hairs, Cook takes a desperate gamble to find answers — even if it means returning to a hell of his own worst nightmares.

Audiobook by Brendan Dubois, James Patterson Review

–In rural Georgia, there is an old house, once grand, and now a dilapidated shack known as the Summer House. Seven people have been brutally murdered including a two-year-old girl. Evidence points to four Army Rangers known as the Ninja Squad for their ability to infiltrate a target and get out without being noticed. The four of them have been arrested and are in the local jail. The DA wants them to get the death penalty. The question is why would they do that? The Army sends a group of investigators to get to the bottom of the puzzle. They are headed by Major Jeremiah Cook, an injured vet and a former NYPD detective. As they investigate, what appears to be a slam dunk case starts to unravel with one clue after another. What they discover will bring them into conflict, not only with the local law enforcement, but, with their army superiors.
James Patterson does not need me to review one of his books. They sell by virtue of his name alone. However, his co- author, Brendan DuBois, is a friend of mine and for that reason this book is of interest to me. (Please note- if I didn’t like it, I wouldn’t have reviewed it. ) The plot is actually quite complex, at least, initially. Once the reader gets familiar with the characters, the pacing of the plot increasingly accelerates. The short chapters with characters’ alternate points of view, often with a cliffhanger ending, are reminiscent of the Patterson style of writing. This adds to the propulsive nature of the book. When the reader reaches the last 200 pages, the book is impossible to put down. I imagine the research that went into the book was supplied by Brendan, as well as, the solid characterizations. Both of these authors should be proud of this book. It is superb entertainment though a bit too long. Highly recommended.

–I like reading James Patterson books and I love his idea of trying new ways to get people reading. This book was easily digestible even with little military knowledge. It has good twists and turns that are always leading to the finale. As I approached the last few chapters I could feel the tension increasing. Thinking “How will this all play out?”. It was a steep climb to the top of this roller coaster but the drop to the finale was all I wanted it to be. What a fun ride.

For readers of Lisa Jewell, Diane Chamberlain, and Jodi Picoult comes another gripping novel from internationally bestselling author Susan Lewis, about an eccentric old woman, the ghost-writer helping write her memoirs, and the destructive secrets binding them together.

Ghost-writer Joely Foster has been asked to write the memoir of an eccentric old lady with a troubling past. Relieved to have a break from her own marital difficulties, Joely escapes to the woman’s isolated house, where she gets to work writing about a pivotal event in Freda Donahoe’s life. On its surface, the story is of a fifteen-year-old girl being groomed at school by her teacher. But Freda is determined to set the record straight by showing that the girl was complicit in the seduction, and had only called the police when she was spurned. But that’s just half the story…

Joely delves into her work, learning more about the events that happened all those years ago. She is soon surprised to discover that the truth lies much closer to home and is bizarrely connected to her. How can Freda’s past be linked to Joely? Could the teacher be someone near to her?

As the story of Freda’s past unravels, it spins Joely into a dangerous world of secrets and lies she could never have imagined, causing her to question everything she thought she knew about her family.

Breathlessly intriguing from the first page to the last, My Lies, Your Lies is an unforgettable novel that intertwines the fascinating past of one mysterious woman to the present of another woman with a harrowing, unexpected twist.

Malorie: A Bird Box Novel Summary

Twelve years after Malorie and her children rowed up the river to safety, a blindfold is still the only thing that stands between sanity and madness. One glimpse of the creatures that stalk the world will drive a person to unspeakable violence.

There remains no explanation. No solution.

All Malorie can do is survive—and impart her fierce will to do so on her children. Don’t get lazy, she tells them. Don’t take off your blindfold. AND DON’T LOOK.

But then comes what feels like impossible news. And with it, the first time Malorie has allowed herself to hope.

Someone very dear to her, someone she believed dead, may be alive.

Malorie has already lost so much: her sister, a house full of people who meant everything, and any chance at an ordinary life. But getting her life back means returning to a world full of unknowable horrors—and risking the lives of her children again.

Because the creatures are not the only thing Malorie fears: There are the people who claim to have caught and experimented on the creatures. Murmerings of monstrous inventions and dangerous new ideas. And rumors that the creatures themselves have changed into something even more frightening.

Malorie has a harrowing choice to make: to live by the rules of survival that have served her so well, or to venture into the darkness and reach for hope once more.

Malorie: A Bird Box Novel Reviews

“Another taut, breathless supernatural thriller . . . [Josh] Malerman masterfully evokes apocalyptic horrors via understatement and suggestion while facilitating suspension of disbelief through nuanced characterization and thoughtful worldbuilding. This is a bang-up sequel.”Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“You know how you sometimes begin a series on Netflix and you tell yourself ‘I’m just going to watch one episode’ but ten hours later you’ve binged the entire series because the story is so relentlessly compelling? This is the book version of that experience. Not only did I read this book in one sitting, it still haunts me, swirling in my imagination even as I write this.”—Jamie Ford, New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet

“I can’t remember the last time I had to set a book down because it was too intense for me to continue. And that’s only the halfway point. Once Malerman hits the gas you better hang on tight, because he doesn’t let up until the stunning finish. Malorie is a relentless thriller that will fry your nerves and twist your heart. It’s absolutely brilliant.”—Philip Fracassi, author of Behold the Void

Two years after arriving at a school for the blind, Malorie and her two young children, Olympia and Tom, are forced to venture out of the place again when mass chaos ensues after creatures manage to break in. She sees a blind woman named, Annette, who was driven to madness by the creatures and comes to the conclusion that the creatures have evolved and can now spread madness through touch. Twelve years after this, the novel finds Malorie, Olympia, and Tom living in an abandoned Jewish summer camp. Tom and Olympia are now teenagers who find themselves chafing under the multiple restrictions and expectations placed upon them. Things take a major turn once Malorie learns of another community of survivors in another area far off and that her own parents may be among the shelter’s occupants. Along the way she also learns that there are people who claim to have experimented on the creatures that have decimated humanity and that they may pose an all new threat to those who have survived.

Slave Girl: Abducted by traffickers. Sold as a sex slave. This is my true story. Audiobook Summary

Sarah Forsyth has spent most of her life in fear. After overcoming the hurt and heartbreak of a horrific childhood, Sarah managed to build a new life for herself as a nursery nurse.

Then, one day, she spotted a newspaper advert for a job in a crèche in Amsterdam. Excited by the prospect of a fresh start abroad, she eagerly signed up. But within minutes of stepping off the plane in Amsterdam her life began to fall apart…

There was no crèche and no job. That night, at just nineteen years of age, her life – her real life, her life as Sarah Forsyth – ended. Fed cocaine and cannabis, and forced at gunpoint to work as a prostitute in the Red Light District of Amsterdam: Sarah was a victim of sex-trafficking.

Sarah Forsyth is a survivor. This is her heartbreaking story.

Sexual slavery and sexual exploitation is attaching the right of ownership over one or more people with the intent of coercing or otherwise forcing them to engage in sexual activities. This includes forced labor, reducing a person to a servile status (including forced marriage) and sex trafficking persons, such as the sexual trafficking of children.[1]

Sexual slavery may also involve single-owner sexual slavery; ritual slavery, sometimes associated with certain religious practices, such as ritual servitude in Ghana, Togo and Benin; slavery for primarily non-sexual purposes but where non-consensual sexual activity is common; or forced prostitution. The Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action calls for an international effort to make people aware of sexual slavery, and that sexual slavery is an abuse of human rights. The incidence of sexual slavery by country has been studied and tabulated by UNESCO, with the cooperation of various international agencies.

Slave Girl: Abducted by traffickers. Sold as a sex slave. This is my true story. by Sarah Forsyth, Tim Tate Reviews

This really opened my eyes to sex slavery around the world. Not only in Amsterdam but in places I’ve visited on holiday and didn’t no it happened. I was not impressed with my visit to Amsterdam and yes I did see the red light district. This book shows exactly why I felt disgusted in what I saw that day. What an amazing woman that can put all this that has happened to her in a tell all book for many other woman to see the warming signs before it’s too late!
Thank you for this brilliant book. (Kim)

After reading the first book I was interested to see how this could be followed.
The book is told still from Sarah’s perspective but looks at a different aspect of human trafficking and prostitution. A lot of which U was oblivious too and had not considered. I enjoyed reading this book (If that’s the right terminology for a book such as this) the references and links to external sites are informative and I genuinely feel that the information provided is true. I am pleased to read how well Sarah is doing in her personal life and wish her every happiness for the future. (Kellie)

Human trafficking is the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labour, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others. This may encompass providing a spouse in the context of forced marriage, or the extraction of organs or tissues, including for surrogacy and ova removal. Human trafficking can occur within a country or trans-nationally. Human trafficking is a crime against the person because of the violation of the victim’s rights of movement through coercion and because of their commercial exploitation. Human trafficking is the trade in people, especially women and children, and does not necessarily involve the movement of the person from one place to another.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone comes another page-turning look inside one family’s past as buried secrets threaten to come to light.

Be careful who you let in.

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

In The Family Upstairs, the master of “bone-chilling suspense” (People) brings us the can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

Family Upstairs Audiobook Reviews

OK, let me get this out of my system… Oh my gosh this was the best fiction book I’ve read all year and holy crap I need to get my hands on Lisa Jewell’s backlist and yeah I basically read the whole thing in two sittings and WOW. So this is my first encounter with Jewell and I was absolutely hooked. I loved the multiple perspective device she used and how it all came together. So let me lay it out for you.

Perspective 1 (3rd person): On Libby’s 25th birthday, she finds out she’s inherited a Chelsea mansion that’s been held in trust. She soon discovers the house has a dark history based on scant decades-old news coverage. Apparently there were three cult-related suicides, but 10 month old Libby was found unharmed and healthy within. What’s not to like about Libby? Her curiosity about why she was abandoned in the Chelsea house is natural because the events leading up to that left her an orphan without a past. She befriends a resourceful investigative journalist to help her dig up any clues that might help her figure out what happened.

Perspective 2 (3rd person): Lucy is living hand-to-mouth in France when her phone reminds her that The Baby is 25. Without the means or identity, she has to resort to some pretty desperate acts in order to get back to England after 24 years. Lucy’s shiftiness and secrecy makes her suspect, but she clearly has her kids’ best interest at heart. And her dramatic encounter with her ex-husband totally floored me.

Perspective 3 (1st person): Henry knows everything that happened in the house the last several years his family lived there. He knew why there were so many extra people living there, what happened to the once-opulent residence and its contents, and how and why people were found dead in black robes on the kitchen floor. Henry’s not the most reliable narrator, but as his story unfolded, the sense of desperation climaxed.

The best thing about this book is the sinister, gothic atmosphere. As I learned more about all the house’s inhabitants and why Henry and his family were prisoners in their own mansion, I got a creepy Jim Jones vibe. But it was so well done, I loved every page of it (including the hilarious acid scene), and I am going to be insisting everyone (especially fans of Chevy Stevens) read this book!

My former publicist (she didn’t die or get fired, I just changed publishers, so she’s no longer my publicist) sent me an early copy of this book. I opened it up the day before book club (this wasn’t the book club book) and I read it all in one sitting. That takes a long time, and The family upstairs was really captivating, so I didn’t have time to read the actual book club book. When I got to book club the next night, Joy got mad at me for not reading the book club book, Ashleigh told me I’m a disgrace to book club, Holly said I’ve had three warnings already and, well, let’s just say I’m no longer part of book club.
Which is awkward because it’s held at my bookstore, so now I’m not allowed in my own place of business one Friday night a month.
But whatever. They don’t know I’m still part of the book club group app, so I see what book they’re reading every month and I make sure not to read it, which means I’m basically still the same member I always was, Y’ALL CAN’T CHANGE WHO I AM.
Fartknockers.
I hated book club anyway. All they do is read.

Secrets We Kept Audiobook Summary

A HELLO SUNSHINE x REESE WITHERSPOON BOOK CLUB PICK

A thrilling tale of secretaries turned spies, of love and duty, and of sacrifice–inspired by the true story of the CIA plot to infiltrate the hearts and minds of Soviet Russia, not with propaganda, but with the greatest love story of the twentieth century: Doctor Zhivago.

At the height of the Cold War, two secretaries are pulled out of the typing pool at the CIA and given the assignment of a lifetime. Their mission: to smuggle Doctor Zhivago out of the USSR, where no one dare publish it, and help Pasternak’s magnum opus make its way into print around the world. Glamorous and sophisticated Sally Forrester is a seasoned spy who has honed her gift for deceit all over the world–using her magnetism and charm to pry secrets out of powerful men. Irina is a complete novice, and under Sally’s tutelage quickly learns how to blend in, make drops, and invisibly ferry classified documents.

The Secrets We Kept combines a legendary literary love story–the decades-long affair between Pasternak and his mistress and muse, Olga Ivinskaya, who was sent to the Gulag and inspired Zhivago’s heroine, Lara–with a narrative about two women empowered to lead lives of extraordinary intrigue and risk. From Pasternak’s country estate outside Moscow to the brutalities of the Gulag, from Washington, D.C. to Paris and Milan, The Secrets We Kept captures a watershed moment in the history of literature–told with soaring emotional intensity and captivating historical detail. And at the center of this unforgettable debut is the powerful belief that a piece of art can change the world.

This audiobook features performances by Mozhan Marno as Olga, Carlotta Brentan as Irina, Cynthia Farrell as Sally, Saskia Maarleveld as The Typists, Jonathan Davis as Boris, David Pittu as Sergio, and James Fouhey as Teddy.

The true stories within Lara Prescott’s first novel, “The Secrets We Kept,” are by far the best thing about it. That’s saying a lot, because the job of weaving together bombshell espionage material long kept secret by the C.I.A. with the creation story of a now-dusty Russian novel and tartly-observed “Mad Men”-era feminism and sexual bigotry was tough. Prescott has managed to shape all of this into an above-average entry in the I-Knew-Hemingway genre.

Secrets We Kept Audiobook Reviews

I wish the characters were more closely linked. it is as if the book had two plot lines who two groups of characters that were only distantly related.
I wanted to know more about some of the characters disposition, i.e. Henry.
This opened my desired to listen to Dr. Zhivago.

“The Secrets We Kept” centers on Boris Pasternak’s novel “Doctor Zhivago,” about which you may know nothing, everything, the movie’s theme music or only how ravishing Omar Sharif and Julie Christie looked in the snow. Very few people approaching Prescott’s book are likely to know much about the “we” in its title. It refers not only to Pasternak and Olga Ivinskaya — the devoted lover who was the main muse for Lara in “Zhivago,” and went to excruciating lengths to protect Pasternak — but to the book’s Greek chorus, the C.I.A.’s female typing pool. As you can see, there’s a lot going on here.

In 2014, the C.I.A. revealed an astonishing story about Pasternak and “Doctor Zhivago”: Once the manuscript had been spirited out of the Soviet Union at the behest of an enterprising Italian publisher, Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the agency launched an operation to translate it from Italian back to Russian, print it in the tiniest possible editions and send it into Pasternak’s native land. The Soviets had banned it, sight unseen.

Years later, Nikita Khrushchev finally read it and expressed regret for that decision. “Better late than never,” he wrote about this change of heart.

Talisman Audiobook Summary

The iconic, “extraordinary” (The Washington Post) collaboration between bestselling authors Stephen King and Peter Straub—an epic thriller about a young boy’s quest to save his mother’s life.

Jack Sawyer, twelve years old, is about to begin a most fantastic journey, an exalting, terrifying quest for the mystical Talisman—the only thing that can save Jack’s dying mother. But to reach his goal, Jack must make his way not only across the breadth of the United States but also through the wondrous and menacing parallel world of the Territories.

In the Territories, Jack finds another realm, where the air is so sweet and clear a man can smell a radish being pulled from the ground a mile away—and a life can be snuffed out instantly in the continuing struggle between good and evil. Here Jack discovers “Twinners,” reflections of the people he knows on earth—most notably Queen Laura, the Twinner of Jack’s own imperiled mother. As Jack “flips” between worlds, making his way westward toward the redemptive Talisman, a sequence of heart-stopping encounters challenges him at every step.

An unforgettable epic of adventure and resounding triumph, The Talisman is one of the most influential and highly praised works of fantasy ever written.

The idea of writing The Talisman first took form when Stephen King moved with his family to London in early 1977. It was there he met Peter and Susan Straub, and their children. The two writers became friends, both being fans of each other’s work. King and his family left London three months later to return to the United States.

Straub and King had talked multiple times before about collaborating to write a book, but nothing ever surfaced until years after King returned stateside, when the Straubs also moved to the United States. According to King, after Straub moved, “the talk got serious,” and they began collaborating. Their literary friendship continued after The Talisman was published; in 1999 they began working on the sequel, Black House (2001), which deals with Jack Sawyer as an adult.

A third and final book in the Jack Sawyer series is planned.

Talisman Audiobook Reviews

I consider myself a Stephen King fan…a Constant Reader, if you will. However, I had never read this novel and was quite excited to begin this endeavor. I won’t say that The Talisman is my favorite King story, but it would definitely merit an honorable mention in that discussion! This was a great book. I loved how different this story is … the unbelievable creativity that went into the prose of this novel. I have never really read Straub, but will be looking him up as well, due to this great story.

I loved the Jack and the Wolf characters. I have always been a sucker for the humble hero… The unwilling hero. Jack takes on this quest because he really has no other choice. Wolf is sucked into the narrative in much the same way, but they both are true and faithful to the light and integrity that is needed to reach their goal.

Frank Muller is simply the best narrator I have ever heard. Especially for this type of novel…you simply cannot get anyone better. His characterization is amazingly consistent, and spot on with each and every character. No one has ever committed to narration like Mr. Muller. I often buy books simply because he is the narrator. He will be missed over and over again.

My favorite book of all time! To me, it is just the perfect epic hero’s journey story. I love that it takes place in the early 80s; I love the grittiness and ugliness of what happens to Jack as he travels back and forth between this world and The Territories, and I LOVE the character of Wolf.

The first few chapters are a little slow and not very exciting, but they are important and hold crucial story points that will come into play later, so to anyone reading this for the first time, I recommend sticking it out and reading on…because it quickly turns to great once the story gets going! I could not put it down the first time I read it, which was in 6th grade.

This is the only book, besides Catcher in the Rye, that I can pick up and just read a few chapters here and there when I feel like it. I don’t need to read the whole book front to back anymore, but I do love just getting that taste every so often.

I know I am paid to be a writer for my day job, but here’s the thing: It’s hard for me to write reviews, since I don’t always know how to describe what makes a book “good” in a way that is eloquent and persuasive. Despite that, I do just want to make it known that this is, indeed, a VERY GOOD book. Read it. I’m open to discussing it with anyone.

The Talisman is a 1984 fantasy novel by American writers Stephen King and Peter Straub. The plot is not related to that of Walter Scott’s 1825 novel of the same name, although there is one oblique reference to “a Sir Walter Scott novel.” The Talisman was nominated for both the Locus and World Fantasy Awards in 1985. King and Straub followed up with a sequel, Black House (2001), that picks up with a now-adult Jack as a retired Los Angeles homicide detective trying to solve a series of murders in the small town of French Landing, Wisconsin.

Mr Mercedes Audiobook Summary

2015 Audie Award Finalist for Fiction and Solo Narration—Male

Now an AT&T Audience Original Series

WINNER OF THE EDGAR AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL

#1 New York Times bestseller! In a high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. “Mr. Mercedes is a rich, resonant, exceptionally readable accomplishment by a man who can write in whatever genre he chooses” (The Washington Post).

The stolen Mercedes emerges from the pre-dawn fog and plows through a crowd of men and women on line for a job fair in a distressed American city. Then the lone driver backs up, charges again, and speeds off, leaving eight dead and more wounded. The case goes unsolved and ex-cop Bill Hodges is out of hope when he gets a letter from a man who loved the feel of death under the Mercedes’s wheels…

Brady Hartsfield wants that rush again, but this time he’s going big, with an attack that would take down thousands—unless Hodges and two new unusual allies he picks up along the way can throw a wrench in Hartsfield’s diabolical plans. Stephen King takes off on a “nerve-shredding, pulse-pounding race against time” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram) with this acclaimed #1 bestselling thriller.

Mr. Mercedes received positive reviews, with many critics responding well to the book being different from King’s “standard horror stories” and being a “compelling crime novel.” It received a 4.07/5 score on Goodreads, dropping to 3.87 as of 19 January with 43,562 ratings [10] and a 4/5 on Barnes & Noble.

Michael Marshall Smith of The Guardian noted the novel “is firmly positioned in suspense-thriller territory and the non-supernatural world – somewhere King evidently feels increasingly at home. … At its heart, Mr Mercedes is a traditional cat-and-mouse story about a psychopathic killer and the renegade cop who makes it his mission to bring him down.” Considering three levels of evaluation – quality per se, expectations of King’s “readers who return for his distinctively unstoppable storytelling engine, his particular and hugely dependable voice”, and rules of “whichever genre” King increasingly departs to, he sums up: “Good book? Hell, yes. Good Stephen King book? Absolutely.” Brian Truitt of USA Today gave the novel 3 and 1/2 stars: “With an accidental gumshoe and a freaky serial killer, … Mr. Mercedes takes the old detective genre in an excellent, modern direction”. He commended “a fascinating look at what makes a serial killer in a post-9/11 context”, adding that King also “really succeeds with Hodges’ companions”. Sheryll Connelly of The New York Daily News stated the novel is “telling a story that could almost be characterized as sweet except of course for the sociopath on a bloody rampage. King will be King, and he’s never less than scary. Who in their right mind would want him to be?” and noted that this is one of his books where instead of it being “horrific, King expresses outright tenderness and it’s evident here.”

Mr. Mercedes Audiobook Reviews

This is a review for those of you who like me, read a lot, but not that much fiction (due to lack of time), and thus want the ones you read to be unique, intriguing, thought provoking – something Stephen King is great at delivering – like King’s 11/22/63.

I purchased this book based on the ravishing reviews here. And I ended up disappointed. So even though I seldom write reviews I am now taking the time in case there’s someone like me out there.

What’s the problem here?
Great characters, and the peformance is GREAT. Yet, it fails to deliver anything novel, intriguing. I found it predictable, a bit of a ‘cookie-cutter’ novel.

I know I’m going against the stream here, but hey, there are many other great Stephen King novels out there (even his book on writing is superb) so if you are a little bit picky due to time restraint and don’t want to be disappointed: pick another one.

During his Chancellor’s Speaker Series talk at University of Massachusetts Lowell on December 7, 2012, King indicated that he was writing a crime novel about a retired policeman being taunted by a murderer. With a working title Mr. Mercedes and inspired by a true event about a woman driving her car into a McDonald’s restaurant, it was originally meant to be a short story just a few pages long. In an interview with Parade, published May 26, 2013, King confirmed that the novel was “more or less” completed. Describing the novel for an interview with USA Today, published on September 18, 2013, King said that while it was started prior to the Boston Marathon bombings, Mr. Mercedes involves a terrorist plot which is “too creepily close for comfort”. An excerpt was published in the May 16, 2014 issue of Entertainment Weekly

If It Bleeds is a collection of four previously unpublished novellas by American writer Stephen King. The stories in the collection are titled “If It Bleeds”, “Mr. Harrigan’s Phone”, “The Life of Chuck”, and “Rat”. It was released on April 28, 2020.

The audiobook is read by Will Patton, Danny Burstein, and Steven Weber.

If It Bleeds Audiobook Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author, legendary storyteller, and master of short fiction Stephen King comes an extraordinary collection of four new and compelling novellas—Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, The Life of Chuck, Rat, and the title story If It Bleeds—each pulling you into intriguing and frightening places.

The novella is a form King has returned to over and over again in the course of his amazing career, and many have been made into iconic films, including “The Body” (Stand By Me) and “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” (Shawshank Redemption). Like Four Past Midnight, Different Seasons, and most recently Full Dark, No Stars, If It Bleeds is a uniquely satisfying collection of longer short fiction by an incomparably gifted writer.

Holly Gibney of the Finders Keepers detective agency is working on the case of a missing dog when she sees footage of a school bombing on TV. But when she tunes in again, to the late-night report, she realizes there is something not quite right about the correspondent who was first on the scene. Soon, she will find that she is not the only one to have suspicions about the reporter.

Gibney is one of King’s recurring characters, having appeared in his Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers and End of Watch), and in The Outsider.

If It Bleeds Audiobook Reviews

Stephen King is one of the best authors in the world. He has written more than 100 books, short stories, and novellas in almost all genres out there. I experienced many of them as audiobooks and just yesterday the Pre-order came in on my Audible app for If It Bleeds, his latest release.

If It Bleeds is another amazing work of fiction from the master, from the King of Horror and Suspense, bringing together four brilliantly written novellas. He could have released each of them individually and would have gone away with that, because each of them is long enough and strong enough to stand on their own.

The audiobook version of If It Bleeds is narrated by three great actors and they are doing an excellent job of bringing all of these remarkable characters to life. Will Patton and Steven Weber are well known and loved by fans of Stephen King for their amazing performances of It, The Outsider, The Myst or the Mr. Mercedes series. The other actor is Danny Burstein, a relatively newcomer in the audiobook industry, but after his delivery in this collection he might get famous fast.

I’ll end this review by saying this: I spent the last 24 hours listening to If It Bleeds for more than 15 of them, I slept 8 and in what was left of the other hour, I thought about the book… With stories like this, our forced isolation in these demanding times would pass much easier.

Thank you Mr. King for all the amazing journeys you take us on everytime we read or listen to one of your works!

Salems Lot Audiobook Summary

Ben Mears has returned to Jerusalem’s Lot in the hopes that living in an old mansion, long the subject of town lore, will help him cast out his own devils and provide inspiration for his new book. But when two young boys venture into the woods and only one comes out alive, Mears begins to realize that there may be something sinister at work and that his hometown is under siege by forces of darkness far beyond his control.

‘Salem’s Lot is a 1975 horror novel by American author Stephen King. It was his second published novel. The story involves a writer named Ben Mears who returns to the town of Jerusalem’s Lot (or ‘Salem’s Lot for short) in Maine, where he lived from the age of five through nine, only to discover that the residents are becoming vampires. The town is revisited in the short stories “Jerusalem’s Lot” and “One for the Road”, both from King’s story collection Night Shift (1978). The novel was nominated for the World Fantasy Award in 1976 and the Locus Award for the All-Time Best Fantasy Novel in 1987.

In two separate interviews in the 1980s, King said that, of all his books, ‘Salem’s Lot was his favorite. In his June 1983 Playboy interview, the interviewer mentioned that because it was his favorite, King was planning a sequel,[3] but King has said on his website that because The Dark Tower series already continued the narrative in Wolves of the Calla and Song of Susannah, he felt there was no longer a need for a sequel. In 1987 he told Phil Konstantin in The Highway Patrolman magazine: “In a way it is my favorite story, mostly because of what it says about small towns. They are kind of a dying organism right now. The story seems sort of down home to me. I have a special cold spot in my heart for it!”

The book is dedicated to King’s daughter Naomi.

Salems Lot Audiobook Reviews

Recently, Steven King said that Salem’s Lot is his favorite of his novels partly because it’s about small towns which are rapidly disappearing from rural America. It was his second novel, the first is Carrie, but years later it still holds up as a first class vampire novel.

The voice performance is also top notch, but I’ve always been a sucker (pun intended) for Simon & Schuster audiobooks. Welcome to Salem’s Lot. Highly recommended!

Ben Mears, a writer who spent part of his childhood in Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine, has returned after 25 years. He quickly becomes friends with high-school teacher Matt Burke and strikes up a passionate romantic relationship with Susan Norton, a young college graduate. Ben has returned to the town to write a book about the long-abandoned Marsten House, where he had a bad experience as a child. Mears learns that the house—the former home of Depression-era hitman Hubert “Hubie” Marsten—has been purchased by Kurt Barlow, ostensibly an Austrian immigrant who has arrived in the Lot to open an antique store. Barlow is supposedly on an extended buying trip; only his business partner, Richard Straker, is seen in public. The truth, however, is that Barlow is an ancient vampire, and Straker is his human familiar.

The duo’s arrival coincides with the disappearance of a young boy, Ralphie Glick, and the death of his brother Danny, who becomes the town’s first vampire, turned by Barlow. Barlow also turns town dump custodian Dud Rogers and telephone repairman Corey Bryant. Danny turns other locals into vampires, including Mike Ryerson, Randy McDougall, Jack Griffen, and his own mother, Marjorie Glick. Danny fails, however, to turn his classmate Mark Petrie, who resists him successfully by holding a plastic cross in Danny’s face. Within several days, many of the townspeople are turned. To fight the spread of the new vampires, Ben and Susan are joined by Matt and his doctor, Jimmy Cody, along with Mark and the local priest, Father Callahan. Susan is captured by Barlow, who turns her. She is eventually staked through the heart by Ben.

When Father Callahan and Mark head over to Mark’s parents’ house to explain the danger that the family is in, the power is suddenly cut off, and Barlow appears. After killing Mark’s parents by smashing their heads together, Barlow briefly takes the boy hostage. Callahan pulls out his cross in an attempt to drive him off, and for a time, it works until Barlow challenges him to throw the cross away. Callahan, not having faith enough to do so, is soon overwhelmed by Barlow, who takes the now-useless cross and snaps it in two. Barlow then forces Callahan to drink his vampire blood, making him “unclean”. When Callahan tries to re-enter his church, he receives an electric shock, preventing him from going inside. Callahan then leaves Jerusalem’s Lot.

In the short story anthology A Century of Great Suspense Stories, editor Jeffery Deaver noted that King

singlehandedly made popular fiction grow up. While there were many good best-selling writers before him, King, more than anybody since John D. MacDonald, brought reality to genre novels. He’s often remarked that ‘Salem’s Lot was ‘Peyton Place meets Dracula,’ and so it was. The rich characterization, the careful and caring social eye, the interplay of story line and character development announced that writers could take worn themes such as vampires and make them fresh again.
