Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets & Advice for Living Your Best Life Audiobook Summary

In her hit Netflix comedy special Baby Cobra, an eight-month pregnant Ali Wong resonated so strongly that she even became a popular Halloween costume. Wong told the world her remarkably unfiltered thoughts on marriage, sex, Asian culture, working women, and why you never see new mom comics on stage but you sure see plenty of new dads.

The sharp insights and humor are even more personal in this completely original collection. She shares the wisdom she’s learned from a life in comedy and reveals stories from her life off stage, including the brutal single life in New York (i.e. the inevitable confrontation with erectile dysfunction), reconnecting with her roots (and drinking snake blood) in Vietnam, tales of being a wild child growing up in San Francisco, and parenting war stories. Though addressed to her daughters, Ali Wong’s letters are absurdly funny, surprisingly moving, and enlightening (and gross) for all.

Post-“Baby Cobra,” Wong seemingly exploded into A-list status — you know, the old “overnight” success story of someone who pounded the pavement outside freeway-adjacent motels for years. So for come-lately fans wondering, Where did this tiny filthy phenom come from?!, “Dear Girls” fills in the gaps. Wong’s study abroad program to her mom’s native Vietnam, for example, proved culturally and ideologically formative, leaving her with a taste both for exploring the outer limits of her comfort zone — so crucial to her brand of comedy — and for eating fertilized duck embryos. “It was practically still alive,” she writes of first ingesting the delicacy, “but after that moment I became really intolerant of anybody who got grossed out by something other people in the world ate for breakfast every day. Just shut the [expletive] up and eat a duck baby.”

Dear Girls by Ali Wong Reviews

“[Wong] spins a volume whose pages simultaneously shock and satisfy. . . . Dear Girls is not so much a real-talk handbook as it is a myth-puncturing manifesto.”—Vogue

“[A] refreshing, hilarious, and honest account of making a career in a male-dominated field, dating, being a mom, growing up, and so much more… Yes, this book is addressed to Wong’s daughters, but every reader will find nuggets of wisdom and inspiration and, most important, something to laugh at.”Bustle

“Absurdly funny.”Parade

Dear Girls can be crude and flippant, LOL-dense and breezy—so breezy, in fact, you will be desensitized to the grossest of Wong’s gross-outs by chapter one, at which point you have already learned how to hold in a fart during yoga. But as with her stage comedy, she is also sneakily thoughtful about the public roles she occupies—Asian American, working mom, woman on comedy stages—and the come-from-behind grind they necessarily demand.”The Washington Post

Wong’s skyrocketing success of late — from selling out mega venues on her Milk & Money tour, to starring in, co-writing and producing the hit Netflix rom-com “Always Be My Maybe” — gets lassoed down to earth with humbling, early-years anecdotes about fearing for her life on seedy tours, trying out material in clubs that doubled as laundromats and bombing in front of Eddie Murphy. “I knew Eddie Murphy specifically wasn’t laughing,” Wong writes, “because everyone knows when Eddie Murphy is or isn’t laughing. You could recognize his signature ‘HANH-HANH-HANH’ goose honk anywhere. And that night, there were no geese.”

Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead Audiobook Summary

Call Sign Chaos is the account of Jim Mattis’s storied career, from wide-ranging leadership roles in three wars to ultimately commanding a quarter of a million troops across the Middle East. Along the way, Mattis recounts his foundational experiences as a leader, extracting the lessons he has learned about the nature of warfighting and peacemaking, the importance of allies, and the strategic dilemmas—and short-sighted thinking—now facing our nation. He makes it clear why America must return to a strategic footing so as not to continue winning battles but fighting inconclusive wars.

Mattis divides his book into three parts: Direct Leadership, Executive Leadership, and Strategic Leadership. In the first part, Mattis recalls his early experiences leading Marines into battle, when he knew his troops as well as his own brothers. In the second part, he explores what it means to command thousands of troops and how to adapt your leadership style to ensure your intent is understood by your most junior troops so that they can own their mission. In the third part, Mattis describes the challenges and techniques of leadership at the strategic level, where military leaders reconcile war’s grim realities with political leaders’ human aspirations, where complexity reigns and the consequences of imprudence are severe, even catastrophic.

Call Sign Chaos is a memoir of a life of warfighting and lifelong learning, following along as Mattis rises from Marine recruit to four-star general. It is a journey about learning to lead and a story about how he, through constant study and action, developed a unique leadership philosophy, one relevant to us all.

Call Sign Chaos by Jim Mattis, Bing West Reviews

“Combining simplicity and thoughtfulness, Jim Mattis has produced a classic account of a lifetime of service. Call Sign Chaos is a lesson in leadership and an evocation of humanity in the cause of peace.”—Henry Kissinger

“In this magnificent memoir, Jim Mattis details many important events in his career, but he also does much more: He explains how he is informed by his experiences in a way that teaches you how to learn from your own. Read, enjoy, and learn.”—George Shultz

“A portrait of Mattis’s life-defining love for the Marine Corps . . .His prose sings.”—David Brooks, The New York Times

“A riveting read . . . General Mattis has had a lot of fine hours, but this could be his finest.”The New York Sun

Stamped from the Beginning: A Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America Audiobook Summary

Some Americans cling desperately to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive and well in America–more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues in Stamped from the Beginning, if we have any hope of grappling with this stark reality, we must first understand how racist ideas were developed, disseminated, and enshrined in American society.
In this deeply researched and fast-moving narrative, Kendi chronicles the entire story of anti-Black racist ideas and their staggering power over the course of American history. Stamped from the Beginning uses the life stories of five major American intellectuals to offer a window into the contentious debates between assimilationists and segregationists and between racists and antiracists. From Puritan minister Cotton Mather to Thomas Jefferson, from fiery abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison to brilliant scholar W.E.B. Du Bois to legendary anti-prison activist Angela Davis, Kendi shows how and why some of our leading proslavery and pro-civil rights thinkers have challenged or helped cement racist ideas in America.
Contrary to popular conceptions, racist ideas did not arise from ignorance or hatred. Instead, they were devised and honed by some of the most brilliant minds of each era. These intellectuals used their brilliance to justify and rationalize deeply entrenched discriminatory policies and the nation’s racial disparities in everything from wealth to health. And while racist ideas are easily produced and easily consumed, they can also be discredited. In shedding much-needed light on the murky history of racist ideas, Stamped from the Beginning offers us the tools we need to expose them–and in the process, gives us reason to hope.

A New York Times #1 Best Seller in 2020, How to Be an Antiracist is Kendi’s most popular work thus far.

Professor Jeffrey C. Stewart called it the “most courageous book to date on the problem of race in the Western mind.” Afua Hirsch praised the book’s introspection and wrote that it was relatable in the context of ongoing political events. In contrast, Andrew Sullivan and Coleman Hughes, writing for City Journal, gave negative reviews, contending that the book’s arguments were simplistic. They also criticized Kendi’s idea of transferring most government oversight to a Department of Antiracism, which Hughes called “openly totalitarian.” While Hughes praised Kendi for taking “a refreshingly strong stand against anti-white racism in the book, rejecting the fashionable argument that blacks cannot be racist because they lack power,” Hughes criticized the book for being “sloppily researched, insufficiently fact-checked, and occasionally self-contradictory.” Kelefa Sanneh noted Kendi’s “sacred fervor” in battling racism, but wondered if his definition of racism was so capacious and outcome-dependent as to risk losing its power.

Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendi Reviews

“We often describe a wonderful book as ‘mind-blowing’ or ‘life-changing’ but I’ve found this rarely to actually be the case. I found both descriptions accurate for Ibram X. Kendi’s Stamped from the Beginning… I will never look at racial discrimination again after reading this marvellous, ambitious, and clear-sighted book.”
George Saunders, Financial Times, Best Books of 2017

“An engrossing and relentless intellectual history of prejudice in America…. The greatest service Kendi [provides] is the ruthless prosecution of American ideas about race for their tensions, contradiction and unintended consequences.”―Washington Post

“A deep (and often disturbing) chronicling of how anti-black thinking has entrenched itself in the fabric of American society.”―The Atlantic

“A staggering intellectual history of racism in America that is both rigorous and …readable.”―New Republic

He is the author of five books:

In 2016, Kendi won the National Book Award for Nonfiction for Stamped from the Beginning, which was published by Nation Books. The book, which is titled after an 1860 speech given by Jefferson Davis at the U.S. Senate, builds around the stories of historical figures Cotton Mather, Thomas Jefferson, William Lloyd Garrison, and W.E.B. Du Bois, as well as current figure Angela Davis.

Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love Summary

A laugh-and-cry-out-loud memoir from the beloved star of Netflix’s Queer Eye, Jonathan Van Ness, sharing never before told, deeply personal stories of growing up gay, transforming pain into positivity, and embracing what makes you gorgeously different.

Who gave Jonathan Van Ness permission to be the radiant human he is today? No one, honey.

The truth is, it hasn’t always been gorgeous for this beacon of positivity and joy.

Before he stole our hearts as the grooming and self-care expert on Netflix’s hit show Queer Eye, Jonathan was growing up in a small Midwestern town that didn’t understand why he was so . . . over the top. From choreographed carpet figure skating routines to the unavoidable fact that he was Just. So. Gay., Jonathan was an easy target and endured years of judgement, ridicule and trauma—yet none of it crushed his uniquely effervescent spirit.

Over the Top uncovers the pain and passion it took to end up becoming the model of self-love and acceptance that Jonathan is today. In this revelatory, raw, and rambunctious memoir, Jonathan shares never-before-told secrets and reveals sides of himself that the public has never seen. JVN fans may think they know the man behind the stiletto heels, the crop tops, and the iconic sayings, but there’s much more to him than meets the Queer Eye.

You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll come away knowing that no matter how broken or lost you may be, you’re a Kelly Clarkson song, you’re strong, and you’ve got this.

Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love Audiobook by Jonathan Van Ness Reviews

“There is plenty to laugh at in the ways “Queer Eye”’s grooming expert frames his story, but it’s the battles he’s waged against the darker corners of his soul to become the bright light we know today that provide the necessary context for this book to shine.” (The New York Times)

In 2020, Van Ness released a picture book titled Peanut goes for the Gold. It tells the story of a nonbinary guinea pig named Peanut and their adventures as a rhythmic gymnastics prodigy. Peanut is inspired by Jonathan’s own childhood pet. In an interview for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Van Ness discussed how Peanut didn’t have any other rhythmic gymnasts to look up to so they created a space for themselves as a rhythmic gymnast. He also announced Peanut goes for the Gold would be partnering with No Kid Hungry’s fund #savewithstories, where Van Ness did a virtual reading of Peanut goes for the Gold to support the children affected by the coronavirus pandemic to ensure they have access to meals that would have been provided to them at school. In a LiveSigning interview, Van Ness explained why he wanted to write Peanut goes for the Gold, saying “I really wanted to do something that would celebrate all those kids that are individual and themselves”, and emphasized the importance of uniqueness and pursuing one’s passions.

Van Ness currently works in Los Angeles and New York City. He has psoriasis, a chronic skin condition, and advises clients on skin care.

In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, he revealed a history of drug addiction issues, childhood sexual abuse, and his HIV-positive diagnosis at age 25.

On September 25, 2019, Van Ness announced his endorsement of Elizabeth Warren for president in 2020 based upon healthcare being a human right.

His memoir, Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love, was published in October 2019. His memoir discusses his past and how it helped sculpt his future.

On June 23, 2020, Van Ness and Queer Eye costar Bobby Berk praised recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions which ruled that LGBT employment discrimination was a violation of the Civil Right Act of 1964. Van Ness described the ruling as “a great step in the right direction.” However, both of them still urged the United States Congress to pass the proposed Equality Act.

Everything is F*cked Audiobook Summary

From the author of the international mega-bestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck comes a counterintuitive guide to the problems of hope.

We live in an interesting time. Materially, everything is the best it’s ever been—we are freer, healthier and wealthier than any people in human history. Yet, somehow everything seems to be irreparably and horribly f*cked—the planet is warming, governments are failing, economies are collapsing, and everyone is perpetually offended on Twitter. At this moment in history, when we have access to technology, education and communication our ancestors couldn’t even dream of, so many of us come back to an overriding feeling of hopelessness.

What’s going on? If anyone can put a name to our current malaise and help fix it, it’s Mark Manson. In 2016, Manson published The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck, a book that brilliantly gave shape to the ever-present, low-level hum of anxiety that permeates modern living. He showed us that technology had made it too easy to care about the wrong things, that our culture had convinced us that the world owed us something when it didn’t—and worst of all, that our modern and maddening urge to always find happiness only served to make us unhappier. Instead, the “subtle art” of that title turned out to be a bold challenge: to choose your struggle; to narrow and focus and find the pain you want to sustain. The result was a book that became an international phenomenon, selling millions of copies worldwide while becoming the #1 bestseller in 13 different countries.

Now, in Everthing Is F*cked, Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us. Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another. He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive. He openly defies our definitions of faith, happiness, freedom—and even of hope itself.

With his usual mix of erudition and where-the-f*ck-did-that-come-from humor, Manson takes us by the collar and challenges us to be more honest with ourselves and connected with the world in ways we probably haven’t considered before. It’s another counterintuitive romp through the pain in our hearts and the stress of our soul. One of the great modern writers has produced another book that will set the agenda for years to come.

Manson’s first book, Models: Attract Women Through Honesty, was self-published in 2011. It was reissued by Pan Macmillan Australia in 2017.

His second book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life, was published in 2016. It appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List at number six in the category of How-to and Miscellaneous in the week of October 2, 2016. and rose to number one on the list the week of July 16, 2017. As of May 2020, the book has spent 179 weeks in the top 10 and has sold over 12 million copies.

Manson’s third book, Everything Is Fucked: A Book About Hope, was published by HarperCollins in 2019. It debuted at number one on the New York Times Bestseller List for Advice, How-to, and Miscellaneous.

In October, 2018, Penguin Random House announced that Manson would work with Will Smith to write the actor’s autobiography.

Everything is Fucked Audiobook Reviews

Read and masterfully delivered by the author, Manson constructs an easily digestible accessible philosophical jaunt through clever interpretations of Nietzsche and Kant as well as the Stoics.

Manson’s path begins with his scribbling – in tiny print – The Uncomfortable Truth (essentially, that no matter how much we distract ourselves, the human condition is meaningless) on coffee cups for unsuspecting chain store customers, leads through a step-by-step “As Seen On TV” tutorial to create your very own religion, inevitably brings the reader to a conclusion that it’s not because everything is f#cked that we need hope rather it’s hope that needs everything to be f#cked, then explains how Edward Bernays channeled this truth with his Uncle Sigmund’s conclusions to manipulate and convince the masses of their #fakefreedom while creating what is now the modern advertising economy.

Manson finally suggests that, “Instead of looking for hope, try this. Don’t hope. Don’t despair, either. In fact, don’t deign to believe you know anything…Don’t hope for better, just be better. Be something better. Be more compassionate, more resilient, more humble, more disciplined…— be a better human.”

My Audible experience was as enjoyable as Manson’s previous entry into the pantheon of anti self-help self-help books and i found myself LLOL’ing (legitimately LOL’ing) enough to consider this work, much like life, a dramedy.

Ever wonder why greater connectivity seems to make everyone just hate each other more? Ever wonder why the news always seems so depressing? Ever wonder why people are seemingly becoming more anxious and miserable despite life getting easier?

Well, buckle up bitches, Uncle Mark is taking you for another ride. Just like The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck questioned our conventional wisdom on what makes us happy, Everything is Fcked: A Book About Hope questions our assumptions on what makes life worth living.

You Are a Badass at Making Money Audiobook Reviews

I read this book as a female business owner at 28, currently working on understanding growth strategies (like obtaining/holding on to those dollars) to scale my business sustainably.
I had already read Sincero’s previous book, ‘You Are A Badass” and was quite familiar with the New Age-y jargon that would be used throughout this book.
Heads up, this does reference the Law of Attraction and spiritual faith quite a bit. While this resonates with a lot of people including myself, there is a chance that it might be offputting to those who don’t believe or understand this concept yet. If you’re on the fence about the LOA, I would recommend “The Answer” by John Asaraaf. The first few chapters are packed with scientific backing on this which might help in wrapping your head around all of it.

By utilizing the practices found in this book (letting go of deep rooted misconceptions of money, meditating and focusing on the feelings of already having achieved my goals) this book has certainly helped shift my faith in scaling my business and take me back to that “honeymoon phase” where I had no limits on what I could achieve in starting my business.

In short, this book requires faith, a willingness to let go of preconceived notions of money and people who have a lot of it, and a basic understand of how the LOA works.

Is it a coincidence I won this book in a this site giveaway the day after I asked “the universe” to bring the books, movies and people into my life that I need in order to further advance my goals? Is it merely serendipity that exactly one week after finishing this book I received a 25% raise, a $1000 bonus and got the certification class I just signed up for paid for by my employer? Or is it because I’ve worked my butt off this past year? Who knows. But I personally like to think that life is not merely a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences, but rather a tapestry of events that culminate into an exquisite, divine plan. I believe the majority of success is due to one’s attitude and ability to remain positive and stay in the right mindset regardless of their circumstances. And this book definitely helped me tap into that mindset.

The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World is a book by the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu published in 2016 by Cornerstone Publishers. In this nonfiction, the authors discuss the challenges of living a joyful life. One commentator noted that both of the authors faced oppression and exile and yet have been able to maintain their compassion and forgiveness despite this. The commentator also noted the theme of the book is that fear, anger, and hatred exist internally as much as externally.

Book of Joy Audiobook Summary

Two great spiritual masters share their own hard-won wisdom about living with joy even in the face of adversity.

The occasion was a big birthday. And it inspired two close friends to get together in Dharamsala for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet.

From the beginning the book was envisioned as a three-layer birthday cake: their own stories and teachings about joy, the most recent findings in the science of deep happiness, and the daily practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives. Both the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu have been tested by great personal and national adversity, and here they share their personal stories of struggle and renewal. Now that they are both in their eighties, they especially want to spread the core message that to have joy yourself, you must bring joy to others.

Most of all, during that landmark week in Dharamsala, they demonstrated by their own exuberance, compassion, and humor how joy can be transformed from a fleeting emotion into an enduring way of life.

Book of Joy Audiobook Reviews

The headline is not hyperbole. I started reading this book in November 2016-when my decades long battle with depression was making its usual cycle. This was exacerbated by political upheaval in the United States. I was struggling and suffering as so many of us have. The words and wisdom shared in this book reminded me of concepts of humanity I was forgetting in my fog. I love this book so much that I ordered 12 copies to share with people I love. I’ll probably be ordering another 12 more to continue sharing the joy.

I simply loved this book. The Book of Joy is a conversation between the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu about finding joy and happiness in the face of suffering and grief. The two old friends met in India for the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday, and they had long discussions over several days.

Writer Douglas Abrams helped facilitate the dialogue, asking questions and taking detailed notes. The reader gets the benefit of both the wisdom of the spiritual leaders and an outside perspective on how the two friends interacted and behaved. It was joyous to read about how the men would tease each other, and then drop some fantastic bit of knowledge. Abrams commented that it’s a sign of how much the two love each other that they can be mischievous together. Because the Dalai Lama and the Archbishop are getting older and have more difficulty traveling, this was likely their last meeting, and their goodbye was a tearful moment for this reader.

I am not a practicing Buddhist or Christian, but I found great comfort and inspiration in this book. There are several helpful meditation practices included at the end. I would highly recommend The Book of Joy to anyone seeking more happiness and peace in a troubled world.

Audiobook by Jodi Picoult Storyteller Summary

Jodi Picoult’s poignant #1 New York Times best-selling novels about family and love tackle hot-button issues head on. In The Storyteller, Sage Singer befriends Josef Weber, a beloved Little League coach and retired teacher. But then Josef asks Sage for a favor she never could have imagined – to kill him. After Josef reveals the heinous act he committed, Sage feels he may deserve that fate. But would his death be murder or justice?.

25-year-old Sage Singer lives in the small town of Westerbrook, New Hampshire. A couple of years before the story began, Sage and her mother were in a car accident while Sage was driving. Sage’s mother was killed in the crash, and Sage was left with a large scar across her cheek, which is a constant reminder that she was responsible for her mother’s death. Sage is self-conscious about her facial scar, and chooses to wear her hair across her face in order to hide it. Sage works nights, alone, as a baker, as she believes that she deserves a lonely life. Sage believes that her sisters, Pepper and Saffron, blame her for their mother’s death, so she actively avoids contact with them. Her best friend is Mary D’Angelis, an ex-nun who owns Our Daily Bread, the bakery where Sage works. Sage is in a relationship with the local funeral director, Adam, who also happens to be married. Initially, Sage seems to be fine with their arrangement, as it allows her to live independently.

Although Sage’s family is deeply Jewish, she refers to herself as an atheist. Sage, recently began attending a grief group, where she meets an elderly man, Josef Weber. Josef is widely known around town for being a kind and generous man. He and his wife lived in Westerbrook for 40 years, though his wife recently died. Josef is seen by many in their town as a model citizen, as he was the long time German teacher at the high school, as well as the baseball coach. After Josef and Sage become close friends, he reveals a secret about his past; he was a Nazi commander in the Holocaust at the Auschwitz concentration camp and asks Sage if she will help him die.

Josef tells Sage that he committed horrific crimes and killed many people. He asks her to help him die by suicide. Sage is conflicted by the request, and after much deliberation, she calls the local police department, and tells them she has discovered a Nazi. Sage is referred to the U.S. Department of Justice, and is directed to Leo Stein, the individual in control of Holocaust-related things in the U.S. Leo, who is immediately attracted to Sage, tells her how difficult it will be to verify that Josef is actually telling the truth, and that it will be exponentially more difficult to convict him of his crimes. Leo is also skeptical of Sage’s story as he does not believe that a Nazi would simply confess his crimes 70 years later. Leo investigates “Josef Weber” and finds that no such SS guard by that name existed, but under much coaxing from Sage, Josef confesses his real name was Reiner Hartmann, who was indeed an officer at Auschwitz.

Storyteller Reviews Audiobook

The substance of the story was deep and extremely descriptive, but in the throws of everything, I lost track of who was who, and found myself confused and trying to figure out what exactly was happening to who, and when, etc.
Maybe it was the fact that the voices of the characters were too similar and hard to tell apart.
Either way, I was a bit lost as to what was happening to who throughout the majority of the story, though it was incredibly intriguing, descriptive and captivating.
Towards the end of it all, I figured it all out, but I just feel that I’d enjoyed it more had I been clearer on the different characters.

Jodi Picoult is an INCREDIBLE writer, and I have loved everything I’ve read by her; it’s just that this particular book gave me a bit of confusion.

Bottom line, the story is enlightening and I actually ended up loving it; I just think I’d have had a more emotional connection throughout had I been able to decipher what voice was which character.
It was an incredibly descriptive and captivating novel, nonetheless.

The Storyteller is narrated by four characters: Sage, Leo, Josef, and Minka. Each character’s narrative is told using a different font. Picoult often employs this alternating narrative style throughout her novels, including in, My Sister’s Keeper, House Rules, Change of Heart, Songs of the Humpback Whale, Sing You Home, Handle with Care, and Lone Wolf.

Mrs. Everything Audiobook Summary

In this instant New York Times bestseller and “multigenerational narrative that’s nothing short of brilliant” (People), two sisters’ lives from the 1950s to the present are explored as they struggle to find their places—and be true to themselves—in a rapidly evolving world from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Weiner.

Jo and Bethie Kaufman were born into a world full of promise.

Growing up in 1950s Detroit, they live in a perfect “Dick and Jane” house, where their roles in the family are clearly defined. Jo is the tomboy, the bookish rebel with a passion to make the world more fair; Bethie is the pretty, feminine good girl, a would-be star who enjoys the power her beauty confers and dreams of a traditional life.

But the truth ends up looking different from what the girls imagined. Jo and Bethie survive traumas and tragedies. As their lives unfold against the background of free love and Vietnam, Woodstock and women’s lib, Bethie becomes an adventure-loving wild child who dives headlong into the counterculture and is up for anything (except settling down). Meanwhile, Jo becomes a proper young mother in Connecticut, a witness to the changing world instead of a participant. Neither woman inhabits the world she dreams of, nor has a life that feels authentic or brings her joy. Is it too late for the women to finally stake a claim on happily ever after?

In “her most sprawling and intensely personal novel to date” (Entertainment Weekly), Jennifer Weiner tells a “simply unputdownable” (Good Housekeeping) story of two sisters who, with their different dreams and different paths, offer answers to the question: How should a woman be in the world?.

Mrs. Everything Audiobook Reviews

This is a big, beautiful book which tells the stories of two sisters growing up during the 60s and 70s, and keeps going as they age and start lives of their own. To say this book is “too depressing” as a previous reviewer said is unfair and untrue. What life which spans 70+ years doesn’t have times of sadness and grief?? This book is lovely and beautiful, and I loved it.

Do we change or does the world change us?

Jo and Bethie Kaufman were born into a world full of promise.

Growing up in 1950s Detroit, they live in a perfect “Dick and Jane” house, where their roles in the family are clearly defined. Jo is the tomboy, the bookish rebel with a passion to make the world more fair; Bethie is the pretty, feminine good girl, a would-be star who enjoys the power her beauty confers and dreams of a traditional life.

This book was EVERYTHING! So powerful, so emotional, so beautiful, so absorbing. I was completely invested from page 1 in these character’s lives, I did not want the book to end. This book spans five decades as we watch sisters Jo and Bethie figure themselves and the world out. From Detroit to Atlanta, from the 50s to the 2000s we watch these sisters and those they love navigate their way through this thing we call life. We see them succeed and fail, grow and stumble, love and lose, laugh and cry. Jennifer Weiner evoked every possible emotion in me with her words. I laughed, I cried, I smiled, and I shook my head. Life is hard and it is complicated. Neither Jo or Bethie had it easy, but they fought and loved their way to their best lives. This was an unforgettable book that left me with a smile on my face and a tear in my eye.

Ms. Jennifer Weiner, I have emerged from under a rock and now know you are a superb writer. I have been meaning to read a Jennifer Weiner book for years, but never got around to it until now. Wow, apparently I have been missing some great reading.

This book really resonated with me. It is the story of two sisters, Bethie and Jo, that takes place from 1950 to 2022. I connected immediately with Jo,(view spoiler) But this book is so much more than that. Jo had her struggles on many fronts, and I felt for her and cheered her on as the years slipped by. Bethie started off as a golden child, but eventually hit the skids and also went through much hardship. The sisters had an off and on relationship, not only with each other, but with their own selves and sets of values. I loved the personal growth these characters experienced.

The writing is outstanding, the themes are complex, the reading is for the most part intense. Other reviewers have thought the book too long, but I was thoroughly engaged and even before the 50% mark was hoping it would never end. I was that riveted. I felt sad as I approached the final chapters. I had tears at the end. I will miss these characters, especially Jo.

Mrs. Everything is one of the 5 best books (out of 50) that I have read this year. It will stay with me for a very long time. I strongly recommend it for all looking for a beautifully constructed, highly memorable story.
